How we made a brand new product

We have more than 7 years experience in hardware and software development.We have more than 1000 active Romanian partners on access control and time tracking software. We produce digital equipment for tachographs that are sold all over Europe. We conducted thorough benchmarking to get knowledge about the problems our clients had been facing. SVTech PRISM is our answer to the COVID Crisis. This way we participate in the fight against the pandemic.

Working Prototype
On 5th May the prototype of the product was finished. The first device that was 100% functional.
Naming
We have created the shape of the thermometer out of cardboard. And to avoid using the term “thermometer” excessively we thought of a name for the product. At the end its shape inspired its name, we named it Prism. It sounds good…
Outlines of the manufacturing process
The plexigalass frame was changed to a stainless steel one. One reason is that with this frame the sensor acclimatises faster, and we can get to versions. A thermometer with one sensor for institutions with 50-100 workers A thermometer gate with eight sensors for supermarkets, healthcare institutions, factories, i.e. institutions with a higher number of people.
Scientific Experiments
The processing of the testing data gave us new insights: at the periphery of their range the sensors will measure temperatures lower with 1 degree. This realisation was followed by drawing a diagram and correction of the error values.

First series, new surprise…
After the frames of the first series of 10 devices have been made, our colleague took the thermometer to the basement as he wanted to measure his temperature after a good workout. And a new surprise: the external changing temperature influences the result of the measurement. It would have been great if the data sheet of the sensors have mentioned this!
Intelligent Algorithm
We have developed an algorithm that filters out the objects in the near vicinity of the device and it only measures the temperature of bodies that are not continuously in the device’s range of vision.
Testing at the Mures County Ambulance Service
The use of the compulsory protective clothing is a strange experience. We have nothing but respect for those healthcare workers that have to work 10-12 hours each day with face masks, protective overalls. We have also encountered personnel that used gas-mask. The first measurements made us hopeful. We have recorded the results of the measurements made by our device and the measurements made with the devices of the doctors and compared the results. Then a new surprise… In the afternoon, in the medical tent where the measurements were made the air temperature exceded 37.5 degrees C. The device continuously displayed high temperatures. (The tent had a temperature, that was a fact, but nobody was interested.)
Second Test – The Measuring Column
We transformed the gate into a column and it worked flawlessly! It measured the correct temperature regardless of the user’s height. We decided that we would like to test it in a healthcare institution.
The First Tests in a Supermarket
We have invited the media, set up the gate and waited observing what is going to happen. People were interested and received the initiative positively. There were some who thought the Stop! Sign was a doormat, other got around the gate, but the majority of the customers understood the purpose and the functioning of the device, and were happy to give it a try. One of the first surprises was that the gate did not measure the temperature of people shorter than 160 cm. Beside this in case of customers who arrived in the early hours, because of the cold the device measured a temperature of around 34 degrees Celsius. Conclusions: We have to modify the shape of the device, as we have to ensure that an accurate measurement can be done regardless of the users’ height. The results measured on the surface of the skin must be correlated with the environmental effects. Due to the fact that the device was present in the media, there is a huge interest in the product.
Thermometers mounted on a gate
We mounted the 8 sensors and thee display on an aluminium gate. After 6 work days we were ready for testing. In our offices it worked reliably. We were certain that in two weeks time we are going to be ready to start producing the device.
Working Prototype
The thermometers have arrived… Our colleague completed the first prototype in three days (we mounted it on the door). As display we used a laptop. It worked perfectly. We were quite happy!
